Fridge, oh my, who knew you will ask for so much of looking after! For years, I have been shoving things into the shelves and just shutting the fridge door, somehow. It was a total spillover and bunches of wasted grocery later, I realized, that’s it. I am in for a major major fridge organization overhaul guys! And I’ll share a step-by-step guide for fridge organization right here. So for starters, you know this already, but just once, in the fridge the food goes to the shelves according to the temperature that it warrants to stay good. Also, for all those who do not know the FIFO method of accounting, it means first-in-first-out, apply that to your stuff in the fridge as well. With that in mind, organizing your fridge seems all the more pertinent, and also I believe we have had enough of squeezing things into the fridge or just putting things in for languishing, getting rotten and thrown away!
Just a few basics before we go about listing what to order for the fridge organization coup.
Label everything you can, ‘eat Monday’, ‘lunch Tuesday.’
What needs to be trashed, trash it now and clean the clutter.
You can decide on specific areas for a group of things, let’s say all condiments here and all types of ‘salsa here.’
Containers, organizers, can holders everything you need to keep that fridge clean and tidy, order them right now!
Now without any further ado, I’ll get straight to the point and give a step-by-step guide to fridge organization. Let’s get started.

There are many that you can get for that classic organized fridge look! But for starters, I will say get the pull-out bins, the ones which can go under your fridge shelves, like the Yeeko Fridge Drawer Organizer Bins with Pull Out with Handle. Also, when ordering don’t forget to bundle it up with the dual purpose freezer and fridge bins like Refrigerator Organizer Bins Stackable for storing the veggies, fruits, yogurts, condiments, the chopped eatable zip-lock packets. And if you have a carton full of sodas or sparkling water taking up real estate in the fridge, then add the Stackable Front Loading Beverage Can Dispenser Rack to your Amazon cart!
A turntable organizer, yes please!
Coincidentally it’s also called ‘lazy Susan’, so apt for a lazy bone like me usually putting a lot of small stuff in the fridge which inevitably gets pushed back and forgotten till the rotten stench starts permeating through the whole fridge. The turntable is the place where I place my small opened milk cartons, the pickle jar, or the half-used lemon, just turn and grab! I have the mDesign Plastic Round Lazy Susan.
Get a good quality food storage container set
See, the paper boxes that your favorite Thai food came in last night will leave an unpleasant smell in your prized leftover! So, do you know now why I am harping on how important these glass containers are? These will help you gauge what and how much-cooked food is left so you don’t end up cooking the same dish again for dinner. Also, it’s a great way to store the cut up grapefruit from last evening or the marinated piece of salmon that you’ll cook tomorrow for lunch. If you are looking for glass containers, the Rubbermaid Brilliance Storage is a great assorted set I will say!
Another brilliant organization hack just struck me, we can also divide fridge organization by the upper shelf, lower shelf, the door, and the drawer.
Reserve the upper shelf for the food which is already cooked like the freshly cooked food, leftovers from today, and the yogurts and cheeses. Cooking pasta tonight for tomorrow’s luncheon? The upper shelf is the place to make it sit!
The middle shelf is mostly for ready-to-eat and packaged food or chopped vegetables.
Ok, do you have a piece of salmon that you want to cook tomorrow or a nicely wrapped piece of pork loin that you intend to sear for dinner? The bottom shelf is the right place for it and so it is for the poultry as well. No dripping onto other stuff this way you see, hence no cross-contamination. And of course, you already know about the fridge liners by now, just in case!
So, when you’re sorting the stuff after a grocery shopping spree, keeping in mind these basics of refrigeration will only help in reducing wastage and saving you money. I am hopeful that this step-by-step fridge organization guide will come in handy for you! Now that we are done with the daunting task of knowing where to keep things and how to organize the fridge, it’s time to put the knowledge into action! After you’re done, don’t forget to give yourself a nice pat on the back! You earned this one fair and square!!
The bottles of salad sauces or the soda and sparkling water cans, butter, juices go in the door. The high-humidity crisper is the place for the veggies like leafy greens, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, and the low-humidity crisper is mainly for fruits like apples, peaches, avocados, plums.
